The vineyards of Picpoul de Pinet surround the Bassin de Thau (Thau Lagoon) on the sunny south coast of France, close to Montpellier. The climate here provides the perfect growing conditions for Piquepoul Blanc – long, hot, dry, sunny Summer days (the sea breezes moderate the temperature to ensure the grapes don’t over-ripen) and cooler nights (the Lagoon protects the land from sharp temperature fluctuations). The other famous export of the Bassin de Thau is oysters – so no surprise that the French always pair their oysters with Picpoul de Pinet! The village of Pinet is the centre of Picpoul production and gives its name to the wine.
Picpoul de Pinet is a really easy-drinking wine which is excellent with or without food. It is a fantastic match for all seafood and shellfish as it neutralises the iodine and salt content in these foods. It also matches surprisingly well with cheese and charcuterie.
