Description
The Thracian Valley of southern Bulgaria has a winemaking heritage dating back more than 3,000 years. The beneficial climate and iron-rich soils have produced an organic Shiraz bursting with ripe berry fruits, hints of black pepper and sweet spice. It pairs brilliantly with classic British dishes such as sausage and mash and shepherd’s pie.
Certifications
This estate was started in the late 1990s. In 2004 a new winery was built thanks to an injection of EU funds. As a result, there has been a marked improvement in the wines from vineyards east of Assenovgrad, long famous for mavrud, and more recently for cabernet sauvignon. The high iron content of the soils gives a richness and robustness to the wines which allows them to keep for longer than might be assumed. Zagreus cultivates 120 hectares planted with mavrud, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah and is certified organic.
